Tech Assignments:

Technical Report 1:

This first report analyzes the structural existing conditions of Columbia University's Northwest Science Building. The structural foundation, floor system, trusses, roof system, columns, and lateral system are all discussed. The wind, seismic, and snow loads acting on the structure are also calculated and tabulated. Material properties, building codes, and spot-checks of typical framing elements are addressed.

Technical Report 2:

This technical report studies the use of three alternative floor systems for the Columbia University's Northwest Science Building. The systems are listed below.

Technical Report 3:

This technical report studies and analyzes the existing lateral system for the Columbia University's Northwest Science Building. The lateral system consists of braced frames in each direction that serve as the main lateral defense mechanism. However, wind girts, the composite floors, and wide flange beams and columns also participate in the lateral system. Seismic and wind forces acting on the building were used for the analysis.

The results verify that wind forces control the lateral system design. Drifts, story drifts, and overturning moments were also checked and found to be satisfactory.
